The typical Thompson SMG, a close quarter weapon max. range @ 50 metres, had a simple metal leaf and notch rear sight (side shielded) and an open blade in block front sight. There was never any intention it should be a precision target weapon, but the point and fire variety. Re the British Army Commandos who used them, typically they tried to achieve 5 shot bursts by mentally reciting various rhymes such as Tommy get your gun, (situation permitting). Naturally techniques and preferences varied and experienced men developed an instinctive touch.
